Project Description

The Sunshine Youth and Community Centre was designed to create a facility that provides for and integrates a number of community facilities with a particular focus on the activities and support programs for young people.

The facility co-locates 2 major organisations – Brimbank City Council Youth and Community Services and Visy Cares Hub. As such the needs of the community and young people were a very important part of the design solution.

The centre was designed to create an integrated youth hub, where young people can both participate in programs and access relevant services. The centre contains social, workshop and training spaces for young people of different cultural backgrounds and office spaces for agencies that provide services for young people. In particular, Brimbank Council runs both youth and other community services from the facility, while other agencies are providing health services for young people. This is complemented by other tenants within the Youth and Community Centre that provide training from Victoria University for legal and social services.

A key vision of the centre was to provide environmentally sustainable outcomes for the building. The focus was on providing an integrated approach to energy and water use, occupant comfort and materials selection. Passive design strategies were employed to reduce the cooling and heating load, including natural ventilation and increased building envelope performance.
